Name Change Check List
The Name Change Check list provides you a list of to-do's that you and your new partner will need to complete. We highly recommend that you do not start this process until you have returned from your Honeymoon as your names on your identification will need to be the same on your passport.
Do I have To Legally Change My Name?
No - If you take your husbands/wife's last name as is and no changes will be made then no you will not have to legally change your name however you will have to change everything that is in your last name to your new last name with your marriage certificate as proof. We recommend starting with your Drivers License first as this is the best proof of identification for most companies/agencies. We also suggest ordering multiple copies of your marriage certificate as some agencies will require an original copy to be sent in the mail.
Yes - If you wish to combine or hyphenate surnames, this would require a legal change of name. If you wish to revert back to your surname after a legal name change you will have to go through this process again.
It is becoming common for the Groom to take the Bride's last name. Some family members could possibly have some difficulty with your decision. Try to be diplomatic while breaking the news gently. Discuss this with your mate and your family well in advance of the wedding. If this does become an issue consider some counselling with a professional.
